CALIFORNIA FLORISTS TO GET DESIGN CERTIFICATION

Recognized professions adhere to standards and education opens many doors. This is why the Master Florists Association has partnered with the California State Floral Association to create a curriculum setting criteria for expertise, creativity and service in the floral industry. Our mission is to create The California Certified Florist (CCF) program and support its use with continuing education for employers and employees.

Based on required reading and practical experience, the curriculum awards a five-year certificate that can be earned by self-study or as part of a floristry program. It is renewable with attendance of three continuing education programs in floristry sponsored by the Master Florists Association and California State Floral Association. It requires dual membership in both. Florists meeting this standard acquire rights to a Certification logo (CCF) for use in advertising and promotions.

WHO SHOULD BECOME A CALIFORNIA CERTIFIED FLORIST?

Applicants may pursue certification independently or be sponsored by an employer. Sponsored students who attain certification will automatically earn a certificate for their employer. Certification requires passing a one-day exam consisting of written and practical sections. It is scheduled twice a year in either Northern or Southern California. The first exam will be from 9am-5pm on October 8, 2006, at the San Francisco Flower Market in San Francisco, California.

The written exam consists of: Cut flower identification, flower and plant care and handling, elements and principles of design, color and light in design, design concepts and styles, containers, techniques and mechanics.

The hands-on exam requires: A pre-designed table arrangement and a wired corsage submitted upon arrival. A vase arrangement, a sympathy spray, a hand-tied bouquet and a surprise package to be designed on site.
